SDG 14: UTHM Climate & Sustainability Initiatives

Knowledge sharing and beach cleaning activities were carried out by the Friends of PTTA Club located at Bukit Batu Beach, Senggarang, Batu Pahat. This activity provides comprehensive benefits, not only to club members through involvement in beneficial recreational activities, but it also contributes to environmental conservation efforts. Hopefully this sustainability initiative can be intensified among all members of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia.
A total of 470 kilograms of garbage were successfully collected through a cleanup program at two beach areas, namely Tanjung Ketapang Beach, Muar and Bandar Mersing Beach, Mersing, which was carried out by 60 students of a co-curricular course with credit under the Department of Leadership, Community Service, Public Speaking and Skills, Centre for General and Co-Curricular Studies (PPUK), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) on 5 January 2025.
A total of 62 Year 5 students were involved in the first 'Peduli Hydroiklim - Protect our planet with HYDRO knowledge' knowledge transfer program.

SDG 14 Targets

14.1

Reduce Marine Pollution

By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.

14.2

Protect Marine Ecosystems

By 2020, sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience.

14.3

Minimize Ocean Acidification

Minimize and address the impacts of ocean acidification, including through enhanced scientific cooperation at all levels.

14.4

Sustainable Fishing

By 2020, effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices.

14.5

Conserve Coastal Areas

By 2020, conserve at least 10 percent of coastal and marine areas, consistent with national and international law.

14.6

End Harmful Subsidies

By 2020, prohibit certain forms of fisheries subsidies which contribute to overcapacity and overfishing, and eliminate subsidies that contribute to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

Ocean Crisis by Numbers

8M
Tons of plastic enter oceans annually
30%
Increase in ocean acidity since pre-industrial times
90%
Of large fish populations depleted
50%
Of coral reefs lost in past 30 years

Major Challenges

🏭

Pollution & Contamination

Industrial waste, plastic debris, chemical runoff, and oil spills continue to devastate marine ecosystems worldwide.

🌡️

Climate Change Impact

Rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, and changing currents threaten marine biodiversity and coastal communities.

🎣

Overfishing

Unsustainable fishing practices and illegal fishing operations are depleting fish stocks faster than they can recover.

🏗️

Coastal Development

Uncontrolled coastal development destroys critical marine habitats and disrupts natural coastal processes.

Pathways to Ocean Recovery

🌊 Marine Protected Areas

Establishing and effectively managing marine protected areas to allow ecosystems to recover and thrive while supporting sustainable livelihoods.

♻️ Circular Economy

Implementing circular economy principles to reduce waste, promote recycling, and eliminate single-use plastics from entering marine environments.

🐟 Sustainable Fisheries

Promoting science-based fisheries management, supporting small-scale fishers, and combating illegal fishing through improved monitoring.

💡 Blue Innovation

Investing in ocean-friendly technologies, renewable marine energy, and innovative solutions for ocean health monitoring and restoration.

📚 Education & Awareness

Building ocean literacy through education programs, community engagement, and fostering a global culture of ocean stewardship.

🤝 Global Cooperation

Strengthening international cooperation, sharing knowledge, and coordinating efforts to address transboundary ocean challenges.
