UTHM organizes 'Caring for Wetlands' program to protect mangrove ecosystems

To continue efforts to conserve and maintain the cleanliness of the mangrove swamp environment, the Faculty of Technology and Business Management (FPTP), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) implemented the Sustainable Development Goals: "Caring for Wetlands" program on 25 May 2024.

2024

UTHM and Evergreen Fibreboard Berhad collaborate to plant 300 saplings

In an effort to create a green environment, UTHM and Evergreen Fibreboard Berhad collaborated to implement a programme to plant hundreds of saplings on campus. Evergreen Fibreboard contributed 500 saplings, with 300 Eucalyptus Robusta (Swamp Mahogany) saplings successfully planted in the Buffer Zone area, Block G7, main campus on 30 May 2024.

2024

UTHM students invite visitors to forest reserves to protect the environment

To increase public awareness of the importance of caring for nature, 35 students of the Community Service Credit Co-Curricular Course Section 3, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) successfully conducted the Hike Up, Pick Up program at the Gunung Pulai 1 Rimba Eco Park, Johor.

2023

Wildlife Corridor Project

Created wildlife corridors connecting fragmented habitats around campus, enabling safe passage for small mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

Malaysia's Rich Biodiversity

🌳

Tropical Rainforests

Home to over 15,000 flowering plant species, making Malaysia one of the world's most biodiverse countries.

🐅

Endangered Species

Protecting critically endangered species like the Malayan Tiger, Orangutan and Asian Elephant through conservation efforts.

🦋

Endemic Species

Over 4,000 endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, highlighting the unique evolutionary heritage of our ecosystems.

🌿

Mangrove Ecosystems

Protecting coastal mangrove forests that serve as nurseries for marine life and barriers against tsunamis and storms.

Major Threats to Terrestrial Life

🏭

Habitat Destruction

Deforestation, urbanization and agricultural expansion continue to fragment and destroy critical wildlife habitats worldwide.

🌡️

Climate Change

Rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns and extreme weather events disrupt ecosystems and species migration patterns.

🦠

Pollution & Contamination

Chemical pollutants, plastic waste and toxic substances poison soil, water sources and food chains, affecting all terrestrial life.

🚜

Unsustainable Agriculture

Intensive farming practices, overuse of pesticides and monoculture plantations degrade soil health and reduce biodiversity.

🏗️

Land Degradation

Soil erosion, desertification and land conversion reduce the productive capacity of terrestrial ecosystems.

🎯

Invasive Species

Non-native species introduction disrupts local ecosystems, outcompeting native species and altering habitat dynamics.

Conservation Solutions & Strategies

🌲

Reforestation Programs

Large-scale tree planting initiatives, native species restoration and community-based forest management to restore degraded ecosystems.

🏞️

Protected Areas

Establishing and effectively managing national parks, wildlife reserves and conservation corridors to safeguard critical habitats.

🌾

Sustainable Agriculture

Promoting organic farming, agroforestry, crop rotation and precision agriculture to reduce environmental impact while maintaining productivity.

🔬

Conservation Technology

Using GPS tracking, satellite monitoring, genetic analysis and AI to enhance wildlife protection and ecosystem management efforts.

👥

Community Engagement

Involving local communities in conservation efforts, providing alternative livelihoods and recognizing indigenous knowledge and practices.

📚

Environmental Education

Building awareness through education programs, citizen science projects and promoting sustainable lifestyle choices among all age groups.

Malaysia's Conservation Priorities

🌴

Heart of Borneo Initiative

Collaborating with Brunei and Indonesia to conserve 220,000 square kilometers of Borneo's rainforest, one of the world's most biodiverse regions.
