UTHM Initiatives for Life Below Water
UTHM contributes to marine and coastal sustainability through environmental conservation, community engagement, education and knowledge transfer activities.
Activities under Friends of PTTA: CLEAN BEACH MISSION
Knowledge sharing and beach cleaning activities were carried out by the Friends of PTTA Club at Bukit Batu Beach, Senggarang, Batu Pahat. The activity provides benefits to club members through beneficial recreational activities while also contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
UTHM addresses environmental conservation issues, 470 kilograms of beach trash successfully collected
A total of 470 kilograms of garbage were successfully collected through a cleanup programme at two beach areas, namely Tanjung Ketapang Beach, Muar and Bandar Mersing Beach, Mersing. The activity involved 60 students from a co-curricular course under the Centre for General and Co-Curricular Studies (PPUK), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) on 5 January 2025.
Protect Our Planet with Hydro Knowledge
A total of 62 Year 5 students were involved in the first "Peduli Hydroiklim - Protect our planet with HYDRO knowledge" knowledge transfer programme.
SDG 14 Targets
SDG 14 focuses on protecting marine and coastal ecosystems, reducing pollution and promoting the sustainable use of ocean resources.
Reduce Marine Pollution
By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.
Protect Marine Ecosystems
By 2020, sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience.
Minimize Ocean Acidification
Minimize and address the impacts of ocean acidification, including through enhanced scientific cooperation at all levels.
Sustainable Fishing
By 2020, effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices.
Conserve Coastal Areas
By 2020, conserve at least 10 percent of coastal and marine areas, consistent with national and international law.
End Harmful Subsidies
By 2020, prohibit certain forms of fisheries subsidies which contribute to overcapacity and overfishing, and eliminate subsidies that contribute to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
Ocean Crisis by Numbers
Major Challenges
Pollution & Contamination
Industrial waste, plastic debris, chemical runoff and oil spills continue to devastate marine ecosystems worldwide.
Climate Change Impact
Rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification and changing currents threaten marine biodiversity and coastal communities.
Overfishing
Unsustainable fishing practices and illegal fishing operations are depleting fish stocks faster than they can recover.
Coastal Development
Uncontrolled coastal development destroys critical marine habitats and disrupts natural coastal processes.
Pathways to Ocean Recovery
Marine Protected Areas
Establishing and effectively managing marine protected areas to allow ecosystems to recover and thrive while supporting sustainable livelihoods.
Circular Economy
Implementing circular economy principles to reduce waste, promote recycling and eliminate single-use plastics from entering marine environments.
Sustainable Fisheries
Promoting science-based fisheries management, supporting small-scale fishers and combating illegal fishing through improved monitoring.
Blue Innovation
Investing in ocean-friendly technologies, renewable marine energy and innovative solutions for ocean health monitoring and restoration.
Education & Awareness
Building ocean literacy through education programs, community engagement and fostering a global culture of ocean stewardship.
Global Cooperation
Strengthening international cooperation, sharing knowledge and coordinating efforts to address transboundary ocean challenges.
UTHM's Commitment to Ocean Conservation
UTHM is committed to protecting marine ecosystems through research, education, community engagement and sustainable environmental practices.
Marine Research
Conducting research that contributes to understanding marine environments, coastal ecosystems and sustainable approaches to environmental conservation.
Coastal Conservation
Supporting conservation activities that help protect coastal areas, reduce pollution and promote cleaner marine environments.
Education & Awareness
Increasing awareness of marine conservation through education, knowledge sharing and environmental sustainability activities.
Community Engagement
Engaging students, staff and local communities in environmental programmes that encourage shared responsibility for protecting marine and coastal ecosystems.
Protecting Our Oceans for Future Generations
UTHM continues to support ocean conservation through education, research, community engagement and sustainable environmental initiatives that contribute to healthier marine and coastal ecosystems.
